Subnautica. Didn't play any prerelease so it was an all at once experience. Been playing horror and macabre games since the original Alone in the Dark. Subnautica automatically taps into my fear of the void and just not knowing anything going into the game was a type of surreal games just often fail at. There's many games that have gotten more screams from me and definitely ones that made me just get up and get away, Subnautica has a compulsion that just eats into you and makes you not want to stop. Runner up would be Silent Hill 2.

Watched a few videos about subnautica but I feel like it doesn’t do justice to playing the game

Definitely recommend the first over the sequel, one of the few games that fully benefitted from dragging out early access to an almost rediculous point. Game feels structured really naturally despite being very alien and the gameplay loop gives a type of satisfaction that makes the fact you're basically the bottom of the food chain not so bad. Below Zero lacks a lot of this charm and structure, its still fun but the original is miles above in quality.
